October is upon us and with it brings the change in seasons, harvest days and, of course, if you celebrate it, Halloween.

We celebrate October in different ways. The farmers harvest the last of their crops and prepare for the winter season. Many people celebrate Halloween which was originally spelled Hallowe’en and referred to as “All Hallows’ Eve”. Although All Saints’ Day is now considered to occur one day after Halloween, on November 1st, the two holidays were, at that time, celebrated on the same day.

Trick-or-treating is a customary celebration for children on October 31st, Halloween. Children dress in costume and go from house to house asking for treats such candy, gum or money. The word “trick” refers to a threat to perform mischief on the homeowners or their property if no treat is given. The “trick” is, for the most part, an idle threat but can sometimes be acted upon whether a treat is given or not!

Halloween parties are customary in schools although many educators now title them “Harvest Fests” as the term “Halloween” is considered to be a pagan holiday.
